Working Theater (Mark Plesent, Producing Artistic Director) has been producing affordable off-Broadway theater FOR and ABOUT working people since 1985. The 2018 Annual Awards Ceremony supports Working Theater’s 33rd Season, which features the continuation of our multi-year, collaborative, community-based theater development and production project the Five Boroughs/One City Initiative. Season programming includes the 3rd full production to come out of the Initiative: the world premiere and NYC tour of ALTERNATING CURRENTS by Adam Kraar, directed by Kareem Fahmy.  Written in collaboration with residents of Electchester (a housing development in Flushing Queens built by Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. and IBEW Local 3 in the late 1940’s as housing for union members), the play is both a love letter to the spirit of community in Electchester and a cautionary tale about the difficulties of maintaining community in the face of increased diversity. In 2018 Working Theater will also continue engaging communities across New York through dialogues and open mic nights, as well as offer our TheaterWorks! program, which teaches writing and performance skills to working men and women throughout New York City.
